Grades K to 5
Whitman-Hanson Elementary Summer Reading Suggestions 2013
Grades 6 to 8
All students will be required to read two novels written by any authors on the DESE Common Core Standards List of Authors. There is no written component to summer reading; however, students should be prepared to write a reflection on the characters upon returning to school in the fall.
The ELA teachers ask that students do not read the following books, as they are part of the grade level curriculum:
Grade 6: Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls, Holes by Louis Sachar, Something Upstairs by Avi
Grade 7: The Revealers by Doug Wilhelm, Hoot by Carl Hiaasen, Banner in the Sky by James Ramsey Ullman
Grade 8: The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
Grades 9 to 12
